A Helping Hand

As we all know the public health care system in South Africa is ridiculous and fails many of us especially the under privileged people and those who cannot afford medical aid or even a hospital plan ! My grandmother has unfortunately fallen under those statistics of those suffering from negligence at the hands of public hospitals. We have recently found about that my grandmother who is only at the age of 68 is almost on her last stage of kidney failure all also while being a diabetic! In running around numerous hospitals and having her undergo plenty of tests after a diabetic stroke we also found out she was being treated with the wrong medication which lead to her quick deterioration and shortly after started also causing her memory loss and hallucinations. The diabetes has also gotten so bad that it has caused blindness in both eyes and most recently renal failure due to the kidney failure. We were told that nothing can be done for her besides flushing her kidneys and for us to make her comfortable and prepare for the worst. We were able to get a second opinion from a private Doctor who was able to assist however we fell short of funds. I come with a heavy heart as this is the woman who raised me from birth and showed up for me even after my mother passed away when I was 14 and my little sister being just 5 years old. All I ask for is for any contribution to assist with gp visits, tests , scans and medication as much of her medication and vitamins we need to buy ourselves as the hospital does not provide some of them. I was the only employees one out of the 3 siblings but I unfortunately got wrongfully dismissed from work for being absent for too long due to being hospitalized from covid and I’m now struggling financially and no longer able to assist at home as I use to. They say a little kindness goes a long way...show that kindness today!
