A Good Heart for Charlie

Charles David or Charlie is a cheerful, active, and brave seven-year-old boy. He likes playing with his toy robots. He dreams of becoming a policeman or doctor someday. He was born with a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), a hole in the wall separating the two lower chambers of the heart. The opening on his heart is large and that is why he breathes faster and harder than normal. The extra blood being pumped into the lung arteries makes the heart and lungs work harder and the lungs can become congested. He needs regular check-up and follow-up to monitor his condition.

On March 4, 2019, Charlie, underwent an Aortic Valve Repair, and closure by patch, at the Philippine Heart Center to seal the VSD. Incidentally, Charlie also has to undergo dialysis to regulate his creatinine levels. We, his parents have been made aware of Charlie’s condition since he was a baby, and have anticipated its implications to our son’s life, and our lives as well. However, when your loved one, specifically, your child is faced with a critical situation, you can never be prepared enough. To date, Charlie’s hospital bills have already ballooned into Php 500,000 (about USD 9,500) and counting. He still needs to undergo several diagnostic tests, and treatments to ensure a better prognosis after his operation. He will still need medications while he is recovering.
