A gift for a true friend

The person that has been in my life for a long time has had a rough couple of years. He has had some bad luck with a lot of health issues but I won't mention what exactly since he hates being pitied. He recently entered a state into a depression as well.

I want to surprise this person with a new computer for his birthday as the only thing that gets him to smile is to browse videos online/play games and listen to music on my laptop as he cannot afford to buy anything.

It is a privilege for me to see him happy. Getting distracted with all that helps him fight his inner issues and get him to relax, even if it is for a short amount of time. The problem is he has been saving for more than a year but with his low salary, he won't be able to afford it at least in the next year. I know exactly what he wants and I am also trying to do everything to surprise him since I know what he has been through and how much he has been struggling. I am the person that cares the most about him and probably his only true friend. Unfortunately, his parents do not deem him worthy of such simple gifts as a computer so they will most likely not even be interested in helping me reach this goal.

His birthday is coming up soon so I had no other choice but to appeal for help to all the good people out there in the world to help me do good to a kind soul. It will not only make me happy to see him reach one of his dream goals but it will hopefully take his mind off of his troubles for a while.
