My longtime friend Yolanda is getting married and I have been asked to be in the wedding as her maid of honor! This is such a special gift and dream come true for me and is my FIRST TIME having an active part in a friend´s wedding. Words can´t express just how excited and honored I am.
What it is I am trying to do:
As an SIT Institute Graduate student working towards developing her thesis in Service, Leadership and Management, I am extremely interested in understanding and broadening my understandings of community development that incorportates sustainable and conscious-living practices. This 2013 is going to be a great year! My vision is to visit particular communities and get to know how they are functioning, what their current projects are and how they are changing traditional social structures. The plan is to document (via travel blog) how these communities are changing and shifting the traditional model for the betterment of their communities, large and small. This is my vision for completing my Master´s Degree. I will be working on a blog and will send it off to keep you all in the loop! Stay tuned...
Along side of this, I will be selling Fair Trade items from Peru to help out families and artisans. In addition and on the side, I hope to continue teaching yoga classes, give ayurveda-yoga massages and offer reiki (I have certifications) while exploring more on health and wellness.
Info ab out me:
I studied Spanish and Latin American Studies, Communication Studies and Global Studies (focus in Sustainablilty and Environmental Studies) at the U of MN, Twin Cities. It has been one year and six months since I began my work in Cusco, Perú coordinating, teaching and volunteering. During my first year, I worked full-time as Coordinator with ProWorld Service Corps, working with volunteers, groups, visiting doctors, professors and running the Study Abroad program with two different University student groups. This was an incredible time in my life where I worked with community development and service learning projects that ranged from assisting rural schools, offering a hand and lots of love of hugs and kisses to orphanages and setting up a work contract with an animal sanctuary (a zoo for rescued and endangered animals). Another part of the gig was the field work where I worked out in rural communities helping in the construction of cleaner burning stoves, animal pens, ecological toilets, etc. I loved getting my hands dirty and meeting the local families. Such great memories... with pictures of pigs to prove!
How I have been trying to do it:
In an effort to continue my research, scope and personal development, I have continued to live in Cusco, Perú. In order to sustain my basic needs, I have been teaching yoga classes and even picked up a short-term job working in tourism selling treks. Currently I am full time at the Healing House, a center where therapies for massage, reiki, yoga, meditation and other such methodologies for healing are offered. I just comleted my Reiki I and II course as well as a ayurveda yoga massage course (got my certificates!) and have already begun to offer! When I am not putting in hours at the Healing House, I cccupy my time by researching current trends, volunteering, reading websites, blogs and case stories about greening communities, watching TED talks (one I am watching currently is "The New Way to Work" by Charlie Hoehn) and dreaming up ways to fulfill (financially) my research passions and travel dreams.
How the funds will be used:
My time in Perú is coming to a close and to make it to my friend´s wedding this Feb., I really need as much help as possible. I hope to raise a minimum of $800 for three reasons:
1.) So that I can purchase my flight to Mexico and be financially comfortable.
2.) To travel to intentional communities that practice sustainable endeavors, are land conscious and community service driven.
3.) So that I will have money to return home to the U.S. after!
I understand this may be a tough time for many but do greatly appreciate any support and donation. Even the smallest dollar amount helps. I have FULL FAITH in the power of giving and reaching out so thank you for all that you can do. Any questions you have, please feel free to contact me: [email protected]
With abundance, love, gratitude and my personal best,
