What happened to us can happen to anyone! Please help us break through this time of challenge and distress.

Hello,

My family is a middle-class Mexican family. On September 17th 2020, I was laid off from my job. I received a severance package split in two checks. 4 days later my wife Monica and I deposited this money in Santander bank. Seventy-two hours thereafter, on September 24th, I received a phone call. A few hours later twenty-two thousand dollars were gone from our account, almost everything we had.

Yes, I suffered vishing. Though, this happened to me under particular circumstances that point to a lack of security of private and personal information from inside the bank. In fact, fraud claims against Santander increased by 186% in 2020 in Mexico. (Click on the image to look at it closer on a separate tab)

Fraud details

It is not a coincidence that upon suffering a similar fraud in 2020, over 1,900 people gathered on Facebook to organize themselves and fight this bank. They formed the group in August and I joined them in October. Currently, I am part of the 5 members in the leadership team. By the way, Santander is the same bank recently targeted by a large multi-state ATM scam in the US. This shows that lack of security is a worldwide issue for Santander.

For months I have worked hard looking for a job and taking part in The Defraudados en Santander MX Facebook group. Helping other scammed people to carry on demands a lot of work. I am doing my best to help in social media, data collection, data analysis, organization, and PR strategy, amongst other duties.

Time Management and Job Search breakdown

Beside a legal strategy, our actions may lead to pushing the bank to give our money back. The average loss is 6,250 dollars per group member.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted everyone’s life. Losing your job during this time is tough, however, I was confident and optimistic that I could get a new one soon… until this tragedy happened to me.

I lost my confidence and my hope for a few weeks. Soon I realized that the universe was teaching me important lessons, and I stood up again.

However, I must face reality. My family’s financial story is not remarkably successful (before 2017 we did not own a house or automobile, for example) so regardless of education and opportunities we live up to date as many families in the world do. Though, we have happily been together for 24 years.

In fact we just saw some of our dreams coming through thanks to this great job position I got in 2015. First, we got debt free in 2 years. We had no savings, so we did an extraordinary effort to build the foundations of our family’s wealth in the shortest time possible.

Despite her health status, my wife took a job at a restaurant. Our two young boys got jobs to contribute to this endeavor too. We also got a mortgage and got new debt to afford the house down payment. So, when we made through the heaviest part, in 2019, one of my kids went back to high school and my wife quit her job to take care of herself and take care of our home. Thereafter the responsibility was only Dad’s.

Sadly, upon losing my job, but mostly after the scam, our landscape seemed unclear, and we feared we might lose everything.

I have not had any actual income for months. We cannot afford mortgage and two car loans’ payments. We stopped my older son’s college tuition, and he had to get a new job to help us out with the expenses.

Financial breakdown

We have no medical insurance. My main concern is Monica’s health. She may not look sick, but she has diabetes, fibromyalgia, and chronic non-alcoholic pancreatitis (up today she has suffered three acute pancreatitis events that have gotten her in ICU for weeks, each).

Monica's health

It is a little hard to fundraise when you have worked to make a living for your own. However, this is one of the valuable and touching lessons we learned from this experience: the universe has rules and you have to flow. Help may come from unimaginable sources.

We value our spiritual growth and the new perspective we have learned about happiness, destiny, and dreams. We are confident that this is a test that we will overcome. Life is a long-term learning path.

For now, we are glad that life is using us to call you upon. Sometime in the future, we will be called the same way and we will respond giving back. I am certain about it.

Thank you so much for your kind reading.

With deepest gratitude,

Clic, Monica, Franco, Jerome and our three lovely dogs (Beyli, Kiba and Hanzu)

  • Clicerio! You have such a kind open heart and bright generous mind. I'm so sorry that you're going through this. I think you're being very proactive. Let me know if you'd like to get a on call for a more in depth conversation on your finances and how we can optimize what you have via both cost savings and revenue generation. I hope you find a job soon and that the bank return the funds to you! I was had identity theft just last month happen to me and the bank returned the stolen money, I hope Santander does the same too!

  • I am so sorry for what you are all going through. It is hard enough to be adrift without full time employment or income. I have been there too. But to have your severance pay stolen? This is so wrong and sad. Banks have a responsibility to secure the transactions of their customers. That should be how they earn our business and trust. They have some crow to eat as we say in the states. I hope you are compensated for your loss, can cover the bills through these lean times, and find a great job to keep you in the house you have worked so hard for. Your friend and hermano, Ken Lo siento mucho por lo que están pasando. Ya es bastante difícil estar a la deriva sin un empleo o ingresos a tiempo completo. Yo también he estado ahí. Tu amigo y hermano, Ken
