A Cross-Border Love Story

My name is April and this is my story. Alex and I were amateur actors. We met while performing in a community theatre production – I was his leading lady. There was an instant attraction and I continued to be his leading lady well after the play ended. Our romance blossomed quickly. Over the first five years, life was wonderful. We moved in together. Alex started to write. I like to think I was his muse. We were planning our future; we were happy – until we were torn apart when Alex was deported back to the US, his native country. Alex and I vowed not to let the distance destroy what we had. There were hours of long distance calls, Skyping, beautiful love letters and periodic visits across the border. Like any long distance relationship, it wasn't easy to maintain, but like a dedicated athlete, we jumped over every hurdle that came our way. We weren't going to be among the growing numbers of failed relationships. We had enough love and fight to keep the flame burning.

We had planned a small wedding in 2013 on our 8th anniversary, but that wasn’t to be. I had an unexpected surgery which left me incapacitated for several months. As much as I wanted to cross the border to visit Alex, I wasn't physically able to. And it pained Alex terribly that he couldn’t be by my side through the slow therapy. The separation was a torment. The love letters and phone calls were a soothing comfort , but it wasn’t enough for Alex. He just wanted to be with his girl. Once I was well enough, things would have to change.

October 2015 will be our 10th anniversary. We would like to celebrate it with a wedding. To finally be a couple under one roof. To start a life together without miles of highway and a border separating us. But we need your help to see this dream fulfilled.

The expense to make the big transition to the US is beyond my and Alex’s means. Besides the move itself, there are the immigration fees, living expenses while waiting for a work visa, not to mention a small quaint wedding to make our union official.
