Summary
We
are the sole nursery school provider in refugee
Camp 1 (Ban Nai Soi) and Camp 2 (Ban Mae Surin),
located along the Thai-Burma border in Ban Nai Soi, Thailand. These 2
camps have a population of around 12,000. 1,100 children between the
ages of 2 years 8 months and 5 years attend our nursery schools. We
started our nursery school programme 24 years ago, in 1993. Each year, we serve between 1,000 to 2,000 children. Over the years, thousands of children have benefitted from this programme.
Steep funding cuts in recent years have made it increasingly challenging for us to maintain this nursery school programme. Young children in these crucial formative years need proper care and support, to develop foundational skills for further education.
Help us provide these underprivileged refugee children a nursery school education, the first step towards a brighter future.
Funding Aim
We aim to raise USD 3,070 (approximately SGD 4,150 or THB 100,000).This will cover 1 year's supply of stationery and hygiene materials, for the 16 nursery schools that we run, serving 1,100 children.
Nursery
school helps children develop foundational skills in literacy and
numeracy, as well as fine and gross motor skills. Fine motor skills
are developed through drawing, painting, and writing, all of which
require stationery such as paper, glue, pencils and crayons. At least
USD 1,535 (SGD 2,075) is needed for 1 year's supply of stationery.
This amounts to just USD 1.40 per childfor the entire year.
Teachers also teach basic hygiene practices such as washing of hands and brushing of teeth- so we need bar soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste. With limited dental care in the camps, oral hygiene is all the more important. Our children go through around 4,400 toothbrushes and 800 tubes of toothpaste in a year.
We also need basic hygiene materials such as dishwashing liquid and toilet cleaner, to maintain a clean and conducive environment for health and education. All in all, at least USD 1,535 (SGD 2,075 )is needed for 1 year's supply of hygiene materials, to keep our children happy and healthy. Again, hygiene materials amount to just USD 1.40 per child for the entire year.
If we manage to raise more than our target amount, the extra will go to supplementing our nursery teachers' modest stipend. Our teachers are currently on a 40% pay cut, since we do not have sufficient funding.
Challenges
We are stretched very thin, with the funding cuts in recent years. As refugees in Thailand, we are barred from obtaining identity cards. As such, we are unable to register officially as an organisation in Thailand. Unfortunately, this precludes us from accessing many funds.
We have not had sufficient funds for stationery for 7 years, and have had to make do with what little we have. As for hygiene supplies, we are currently using bar soap donated by an NGO for all cleaning needs. However, we are running low on this, with only 108 bars of soap left. This will only last us until the end of December 2018.
Solution
We hope that crowdfunding can help plug the gap for our nursery school programme's stationery and hygiene material needs. We are also actively applying for funding for other areas of this programme, such as staff stipends and school lunches.
- Sponsor 1 child's stationery and hygiene materials for 2018 with just USD 2.80.
- Sponsor a box of crayons for 15 children with just USD 1.00 (SGD 1.40).
- Sponsor 2 weeks' worth of interactive storytelling for 1,100 children with just USD 3.40 (SGD 4.60).
For
less than half the price of a cup of coffee from Starbucks, you can
make a difference in 2018.
Notes
All the funds, excluding the small percentage required for third-party administration and transaction fees, will go to Karenni National Women's Organisation (KNWO). KNWO will use these funds to purchase stationery and hygiene materials for its nursery school programme. Our target amount is XXX, which will cover 1 year's supply of stationery and hygiene materials for all 16 nursery schools, affecting 1,100 refugee children.
For transparency, please note that this fundraising campaign is mainly run by Nicole, a volunteer and Communications Manager at KNWO. Due to banking limitation on KNWO's side, donations from this campaign will be transferred to her account initially. From there, on a regular basis, the donations will be remitted to KNWO's bank account. Donations are requested in SGD to minimise the amount lost through currency conversion.
