Faith can no longer see but with help, this bright and curious young girl will flourish.

On the 14th of November 2020, Faith Moyana celebrated her 9th Birthday. This is a picture of her just before she blew out her birthday candle, her face dotted with the caramel topping from her cake. Her young brother relishing in his sisters joy and eager to tuck into the tasty treat. All seems normal at face value however, 3 days prior to this the Moyana family received final confirmation that Faith was unlikely to ever see again.

Getting to know Faith during this process has been a gift. She is the embodiment of joy, courage, trust, curiosity and love. We want to ensure that she gets to live her best life possible. Our goal is to raise funds to enable Faith's family to put the required infrastructure in place to support her learning and mobility. Our objective is to cover the following costs:

  1. The BrailleBuzz, an instructional toy for young braille learners
  2. A Sunu band, a mobility aid which combines a sonar or echolocation sensor with a high-resolution vibrating actuator to gently inform the user about objects or obstacles up to 5 meters away.
  3. The Victor Reader Trek. A talking book player & GPS
  4. Boarding fees as the closest school is an hour from her home
  5. Transportation fees to enable her to spend the weekends at home with her loving family

We have submitted an application to the local school for the visually impaired and await feedback.

This is their story….

A year ago, George, Faith’s father, was beaming with pride over his daughter’s successful year at school (grade 1). He proudly told us how well she had done and that he was saving up to buy her a tablet (computer) to reward her for her hard work and diligence.

George Moyana is responsible for the general maintenance and care of the grounds at a residential estate in the Western Cape. The moment I met him I was taken by his authentic, curious and humble demeanour. I knew I would learn a lot from this true gentlemen and that I certainly have. A man of courage, honour and integrity who’s love and commitment to his family is awe inspiring.

In May 2019 George received a message from his family in Zimbabwe that his eldest daughter was not well. He arrived back home to find his daughter Faith in a fragile state. Her head was swollen, she had periods of partial sight and her general mobility had been impacted. He rushed her to Pietersburg hospital in Polokwane where an MRI scan revealed a left thalamic mass with associated mass effect obstructive acute hydrocephalus. In essence, Faith had a build-up of fluid on the brain and the scan revealed she had a tumour on the hypothalamus, an extremely complex part of the brain containing many regions with highly specialised functions. A shunt was surgically implanted to drain away the excess fluid on the brain. Faith had moments of partial sight before the surgery and there was therefore hope that Faith’s eye sight would recover. Unfortunately, the intervention was not able to save her eye sight.

Faith was referred to the Red Cross Hospital for further assessment. Due to personal circumstances and the impacts of COVID, the follow-up process at the Red Cross Hospital in Cape Town only started in August 2019. Faith was blessed to be under the care of the most remarkable Paediatric Neurosurgeon, Dr Nico Enslin who conducted the high risk biopsy with phenomenal care and precision and was able to confirm that the tumour was a hypothalamic hamartomas (HH), a rare, benign (noncancerous) tumour. This meant that Faith did not need any further treatment for the tumour which could have been life threatening.

Sadly, the pressure caused by the fluid build-up has done irreversible damage to the optic nerve causing complete loss of vision bilaterally.
