“When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” These lines have given me the courage to write this letter. I am writing this letter to seek help for my father’s lung surgery. He has a tumour in his lungs. After one year of going through multiple chemotherapy treatments, now it is at a stage that the tumour can be removed via surgery. We have already sold most of our lands to cover his treatment cost. Now we need more partners in this journey.
My father, a 65-year-old man, lives in a remote Bangladeshi village. Our village, Saldigha, is a scattered island-like place with no direct road communication with the district town. Every year during the rainy season the entire area becomes inundated by floodwater. The village appears as small, sporadic islands. Canoes are the principal mode of transport during this time. During the dry season, the principal mode of transportation is walking. He lived all his life in the village, cultivating our lands and running a small business in the village bazaar. He gave up his own education and started running the big joint family in his 20s. Every day he worked from 7am to 10pm relentlessly.
I was not only the first person in my village to go to university, I was the first to receive a scholarship to study abroad. I still remember the day the news of scholarship came, and I saw tears in my father’s eyes. I finished studies. And he was the proudest of all. We did not realise that our happy moments are not there to last long. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in early 2018. His illness has taken a great toll in our family, forcing us to spend all our savings, and selling our cultivable lands. His cancer has not spread to any other part of the body. It is localised in the small portion of his lungs. The doctors are extremely hopeful that he will return to his normal state once the surgery is completed.
It is hard to describe suffering. I don’t know how else to ask for a hand in this difficult journey. Would you be a part of our journey? Thank you in advance. God bless you and your loved ones.
