Campaign Story
Seal entanglement is a massive problem on Namibia's coastline. A very active fishing industry and 1.5 million Cape Fur Seal are competing for marine resources. Seals are naturally playful and curious, and they often end up playing with plastic rubbish and ocean pollution such as fishing line, fishing net, packing strap, plastic bags or any other item that made its way into the ocean.
Once entangled, seals cannot help themselves. As they grow, the entanglement will tighten around the seal's neck, flipper or mouth, leading inevitably to its gruesome death. All seal entanglements are caused by human negligence. In 2019, Naude Dreyer and his associates freed more than 150 seals in the area around Pelican Point.
Ocean Conservation Namibia (OCN) is an initiative started by Naude and Katja Dreyer in Walvis Bay, Namibia. It is their mission to catch, disentangle and to release as many seals as possible. Between 2020 and 2022, Ocean Conservation Namibia has caught and released 2000 seals, many more will need help.
OCN relies entirely on private donations. There is no government funding available in Namibia, and all expenses for rescues have to be covered through generous people such as you. With your help and ongoing support, we can continue to patrol our beaches and find seals in need, before they get seriously injured.
