Bring New Hope For A New Sky

Update posted by Joanne Sendon Palad On Feb 10, 2017

We were able to take Sky home and give her a beautiful wake and burial, something that we were able to get good memories from even though it was her last moments with us.

However, we weren't able to secure important documents from the hospital to help us get financial assistance outside because of our 1 million unpaid medical bills (hospitalization plus doctor's fee).

We are doing our best and working our hardest to earn the money we need but what we get from our efforts aren't that much. We have built an online shop and sold off Sky's things to somehow raise the funds. We aren't there yet but we're taking baby steps, one at a time for my angel baby Sky.

With a $20,000 hospital debt and an expensive workup to get pregnant and maintain the pregnancy again, is a new baby really possible?

Yesterday, I had my first postpartum check-up with my Perinatologist. She said that I need to be tested for Alagille Syndrome gene mutation before trying to get pregnant because my angel Sky was diagnosed with it and they need to rule that out. Although that was not yet clinically proven because my baby passed away even before the genetic testing.

Knowing the gene test already costs almost $3,500 and the pre-pregnancy work-ups and treatments cost the same, makes it more difficult to believe in a chance to have a baby. And that's still not knowing what the result of the gene testing would be. Adding to the fact that people, most especially those close to you, say things like "Why did you go to the same doctor? You should do this and that and not waste your effort again." makes it even more stressful.

If we have that much money, maybe having a baby wouldn't really be an issue. But we don't have that much. If only getting pregnant was that easy. If only getting pregnant was free. If only having a healthy baby don't cost much.

Until now, I want to try to understand things, accept them and still believe in miracles. But all of that seems difficult especially when my fourth baby was born yet was still taken away from me.

Why am I writing this down in here? Maybe because I know only a few would read this and I'm wishing that maybe we'll get the luck we need through online crowd funding like this.

Our Selah Khloe Ysabel AKA baby Sky, went home to heaven with Jesus last December 19, 2016. She fought a good fight and stayed with us for 49 days.

Her passing will never be easy to accept. She will always be our first born child and youngest to her three angel siblings. I will always be her mom even though we weren't able to bring her home.

In her 49 days of stay at the NICU, her hospital bill reached a whopping $37,000 (Php1.8M). We were able to settle around $17,000 but the remaining $20,000 (Php1M) is still unpaid.

Our hospital debt is a really huge amount when compared to how much me and my husband are earning which sometimes is still not enough to sustain our monthly necessities and other amortizations.

We still want to be given a chance to try to conceive and give birth to a beautiful new baby, but with our huge debt and the cost of treatment to try to conceive again, that may still be far fetched.

Anyone of you who will find it in your heart to help will definitely bring a new hope to our family. You will bring a new hope of life and a chance for us to settle our fourth angel's remaining hospital debt. This way, enabling us to prepare enough fund for my next pregnancy.

With all the love from Sky's Mommy,

Sky, like any other babies, cry whenever she's hungry, needs a nappy change or in pain. And we, being not yet used to seeing her color's drastic change, really panic in fear. I'm not sure if we'll ever get used to it. I just know that this whole experience will make us more resilient.

During our first weeks at the NICU, ventilator tube, IV lines and glucose test pricks break our hearts already. But now, we are just happy she's alive and we want nothing more but for Sky to feel better and not experience any more hardships than she already have. And even though I want Sky to be weaned off of her oxygen support completely, I want it to happen at her own pace, whenever she's ready.

Today, I just cherish every hug, every latch and her every little milestones each passing day.

Jesus is our Ram, the one who died for Sky so she won't have to live sick and in pain!

Sky was just weaned from her high flow oxygen today!

Our prayer is that soon she'll be completely weaned from her low-flow oxygen, and that she will fully tolerate her feeding, so that she can finally go home with us!

To know if she's ready for weaning, the doctor will try to decrease her oxygen saturation and see how low her heart and lungs can tolerate. Because of her condition, Sky's acceptable oxygen level is at 60s to 80s, the normal value of a healthy heart being at 100. But there are moments when her stats would look great and you have to take pictures to somehow make that moment last like in the photo below.

Admittedly, most of the time we find ourselves unable to react to new issues arising from Sky's health and her accumulating medical expenses. It's like we were numbed by the roller coaster of emotions and challenges we faced for the past weeks. But we constantly find a reassuring hope within our hearts and a reason to rejoice knowing that through His love and grace, Sky will soon go home and her hospital bills settled, we may not know how yet.

A serious cause for concern is the result of the initial CSF (Cultured Spinal Fluid), which revealed that Sky has a Partially Treated Meningitis because of her septic blood. But we are giving it all to the Lord knowing only He can heal and make all things well pertaining to Sky's health condition. God makes all things beautiful in His perfect timing.

We also have to deal with mounting hospital bills and doctor's fees which need updating, adding to that, the NICU doctors and in-house collection reminding us regularly.

But in all these, we believe we will come out smelling sweet because the Lord is with us through this fire till we are able to bring Sky home.

Sky's has had lumbar puncture the other day. One of her neonatologist aspirated fluid from her spine to determine the organisms causing her infections. The procedure's quick but too painful for our little angel. We are praying that our little one will quickly recover and have strength from all the pangs of what she is going through right now, also, that there's no further damage caused by the organisms infecting her blood, most especially her brain.

Although we catch ourselves hopeless at times, especially with the recent happenings, we thank God that He used people to remind us that He is still in control.

After the doctors discovered that Sky had a high level of infection causing her heart rate and oxygen level to drop, it's still a miracle that Sky was able to recover and that it left no adverse effect on her heart, lungs and brain. She is still alive, fighting, wanting to be with her momma and daddy.

Miracles do happen everyday. I know it was God who protected her in the midst of that life threatening situation.

Soon, her ventilator and tubes will be removed and she'll be fed with mommy's freshly expressed milk again.

The first 17 days since Sky was born was spent in the hospital. This is the same hospital where she was born and thereby receiving treatments, having diagnosed with congenital heart defect and persistently low platelet count. Her doctors have explored all possibilities that may have caused it. Another round of tests was recommended to rule out Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

Last night, Sky's vital signs went bad. Her heartbeat went down to 30 beats per minute, her platelet count to its lowest at 30,000. She seemed so weak.. It was scary. It was unbearable to see her tiny body almost lifeless. The doctor and nurse staff went frantic and immediately took proper action. She went through another round of tests and procedures to determine the cause of vital signs drop. She was given antibiotics upon doctor's order after the result of the CBC came out. Apparently she caught an infection. She was transfused another round of platelet concentrate to address her low platelet.

It was not easy for her parents and us, families, to see Sky in this condition. Please continue to pray for her so that she will regain her strength soon. Like us, her parents wanted so badly to take her home and cuddle her as normal parents would.
