This is the story of a loving mother named Bbeth Al-ag Ocab. Mama Bbeth was born on 24 November 1958. She is active in her church ministry as a chorister. Her choirmates find Mama Bbeth charming and friendly. Her neighbors have the same observation about her. In short, Mama Bbeth is one happy woman who finds delight in serving the Lord until symptoms showed up in November last year.
At first, Mama Bbeth had an upset stomach which she immediately dismissed to be an effect of something bad she ingested. She self-medicated by applying ointment on her belly.
Due to the persistence of the symptom, Mama Bbeth was rushed to the Veterans Medical Hospital in February this year by her husband, Armando, a retired Philippine Navy officer. In the hospital, a series of tests were made to further diagnose the disease which yielded inconclusive results. Despite this, the family decided to bring Mama Bbeth home. Her doctors, however, prescribed medications which she religiously took in.
A few weeks later, Mama Bbeth’s medical condition worsened. Her belly started to grow in size. With this, Mama Bbeth was rushed to the Makati Medical Center (MMC) where she was admitted. There her stomach was drained because of a condition called Ascites.
For two weeks the water in Mama Bbeth’s stomach was filtered out of her. She was on a soft meal diet because of the pain she feels every digestion. She felt full after consuming 4-5 spoonfuls of every meal. After a few more days of stay in the hospital, she was discharged and was brought home with another set of medicines.
Unfortunately, at the time we thought that Mama Bbeth was on her way to full recovery, we noticed that her stomach grew in size even more. On 5 March 2020, we rushed Mama Bbeth to the MMC. The challenge was real because the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic was starting. Fortunately, she was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the said hospital. She was diagnosed with massive Ascites.
Some more lab tests and procedures were made on her which yielded a very disturbing result: Mama Bbeth has cancer in the colon. This bruised our spirit and destroyed our inner peace. Cancer is one challenging medical condition. Apart from this, we could not afford but worry the hospital billing which had already sky-rocketed.
The doctors further confirmed a hole in her colon which caused sepsis. The only remedy the doctors suggested for the meantime was dialysis. This 6-hour procedure takes a toll on her vigor every time, not to mention the resulting unstable blood pressure and irregular heartbeat. To help Mama Bbeth stabilize her vitals, pressors, and other medicines in high dosage were given. Continuous high dosage medication resulted in spontaneous gangrene of Mama Bbeth’s phalanges in her lower extremities (toes).
For every lab test and procedure, Mama Bbeth needs to undergo dialysis amounting to 10, 000 pesos.
A born fighter indeed, Mama Bbeth was transferred from the ICU of MMC to a semi-private room where she is now recuperating.
To this writing, Mama Bbeth’s current hospital bill is 1, 450, 000 pesos. With this, we are appealing to your benevolent hearts, dear readers.
We want to keep Mama Bbeth in our lives longer. We believe that everything happens for a reason. God has a purpose for sending this challenge to our family. He also has his purpose for bringing up Mama Bbeth’s condition to your concern, too, today.
We are praying for good Samaritans who could help financially our embattled family. Please help us keep Mama Bbeth.
