Former South African Navy Diver and Royal Marine Commando Jon Vickers, aka the Electric Eel, is gearing up for seven Robben Island crossings in seven days, to raise funds for the family of former Paralympian Achmat “Sharkboy” Hassiem, currently in rehab.

Achmat went in for routine spinal surgery in early September 2021 but there were complications and he spent significant time in a coma and is still in rehab.

The Challenge starts on Monday, 25 April 2022, with a single crossing daily; a double crossing on Wednesday (Freedom Day); and a day off on Saturday before his last crossing on Sunday, 1 May. Some of the biggest names in South African long-distance swimming will be joining him for the double crossing on Wednesday.

Please support him in this fundraising for Achmat’s medical bills.

Challenge completed! I don't have words for all of the emotions running through me after this week. There were days this challenge seemed insurmountable, but with a cause like helping Sharkboy there was no backing out and boy am I glad I didn't! Finally, I had great conditions and an

An amazing end to my 6th crossing - being greeted by Achmat Sharkboy's family, my family, my Big Bay Surf Lifesaving Club family and supporters. I had the honour of wearing Achmat's Olympic swimming cap and using his towel and jacket as I came out of the water.

Nature is throwing everything at this challenge. Today the mist and rain brought me to shore, it was hectic! Taking a rest day tomorrow to recover before the final two crossings on Sunday and Monday. Disappointing not to finish the challenge on Sunday, but with such cold sea temperatures the

Double Robben Island crossing completed despite the freezing temperatures - below 10 degrees! Surprisingly I enjoyed the swim, but the biggest reward was seeing Sharkboy's family at the finish.

It is a great disappointment that I was unable to complete (or even start!) today’s crossing, but we are at the mercy of nature and conditions were definitely not in our favor despite how much better it seemed than yesterday when we launched this morning. We are working on the
