Rotifunk Hospital, which serves over 150,000 villagers in Sierra Leone’s back country, was completely destroyed by the blood diamond war in 2000. For the last 15 years we have been rebuilding, equipping and staffing this desperately needed hospital. And now, just as a new doctor is about to move in, his home is totally destroyed.
The physician needs to be as close to the hospital’s ER as possible to save lives. The residence onsite has been a godsend. Minutes even seconds matter in an emergency, especially when a baby is being born and there are complications.
The new highly trained doctor came to us after an exhaustive search. The residence is part of the package accepted by him and this fire could risk this partnership without a permanent replacement in the works soon. A Sierra Leonean physician is necessary, because by law a physician in charge has to oversee the work of medical mission teams.
$50,000 is urgently needed to reconstruct a house as soon as possible that will help us keep the current doctor and assure longevity of future staff. To learn more about the mission and other lifesaving work, go to Rotifunk.org.
