40th Birthday for my wife

I am planning a surprise 4oth birthday party event for my wife, but funding is very tight for us right now.

My wife is the core of our family, taking care of the kids, working full time, and providing a great family environment.   I feel extremely guilty that I don’t have enough money to give her a party that she truly deserves.  

My plan is to take her to dinner and then have friends meet us at a local pub for the surprise. Many of our friends are too in financial strains that we are with the economy taking a down turn, and the loss of jobs in Oregon. I know that they most likely wouldn’t attend if I asked them to contribute.
