HUNGER FACTS

FACT A child dies from hunger-related causes every 10 seconds.

Every day, hunger kills nearly 8,000 kids under age 5. Some die of starvation, others from illness brought on (or made worse) by a lack of nutrition. Hunger weakens a child's small body, making him or her more vulenrable to disease.

FACT More than 1 billion people experience hunger every day

One of every six people in the world will go to bed hungry tonight. The odds are even worse if you're a kid. 1:3 children in developing countries don't get he nutrition they need.

Why are so many people hungry? Many families depend entirely on what they can grow, so they're never more than one disaster--natural or manmade--away from hunger. Others work day and night, but can still barely afford food for their families.

FACT The poor spend most of their money just trying not to starve.

Imagine you earn $1.25 a day. That's all you have to feed yourself and your family--not to mention pay for rent, school fees, medical bills, etc. Now imagine the price of bread just doubled. What are you going to cut back on? Will you take your kids out of school so you can afford to buy food? Will you find cheaper (and less nutritious) food to eat? Or will you go from two meals a day to just one?

Around 1.4 billion pople live on less than $1.25 a day, and these are the kinds of impossible choses they have to make every day.

Hunger is 100% preventable if we all do our part.
