3-Year-Old's Bone Marrow Transplant

My son, Mahtab E Rabbani is 3 years old. He was diagnosed with a blood disorder called Thalassemia Major at 4 months old.

Thalassemia Major is a rare blood disorder that results in the body forming an abnormal hemoglobin. People born with this disease cannot produce healthy, functioning blood cells. Constant blood transfusions are the only treatment available. It allows patients to live relatively normal lives, but there’s never a guarantee. Other than a bone marrow transplant, there’s no cure. This disease results in severe anemia and bone marrow expansion as the body’s effort to produce more red blood cells. This leads to poor growth, impaired physical activities, facial and other bone deformities, fragile bones and enlargement of the liver and spleen. If left untreated, it will lead to death within the first decade of life.

Two years ago, my eldest son was taken by this disease at the age of nineteen. My two middle children are carriers. My youngest, my baby, Mahtab, was not as fortunate.

My wife and I made the decision to get the baby a bone marrow transplant. It is a very expensive and lengthy treatment process. At last stage of treatment, his doctors told us his BMT failed and we needed to redo the process. We have already spent all of our money and resources and there are no loopholes. We are standing face to face with a dead end…

Help us. If you are a parent, we pray you never have to face this, and the same goes for your children’s children, and their unborn legacies.

My wife and I had four children. Now it’s three. God forbid, don’t let it be two.

A parent can never express their emotions at the loss of a child. It crushes your heart when you see your child, day after day, for nineteen years straight, suffer through the agonizing pain you couldn’t even begin to imagine. When they’re gone...at least he doesn’t suffer anymore. May he be protected. After that, you’d think the cycle ends. But it starts again. You see another son suffer three years. Wouldn’t you too go even beyond the ends of this earth to end their pain?
