Hello everyone!
My name is Reuben Owuor from Kenya. I was born and raised in Kibera, The largest slum in Africa. I am the first born of five siblings; this gave me the privilege of looking after my younger siblings and protecting them whenever we played or were at school. Since I was young, I had a dream if going to University, however, it has not yet come to pass, I came from a humble background and my parents could only afford to provide basic education, I am grateful for their sacrifices.
After I completed high school, I got involved in community projects in Kibera like clean-up activities, and drug and awareness and sensitization among others, This gave me the opportunity to interact with people in the community.
For the past five years, I have been passionately working with street youths and young women in Kawangware and Kibera slums, Empowering them on Entrepreneurship and life skills training, This gave me opportunity to know, The challenges youths are facing in slums, and ways as a team, We can always come with solutions. For instance, The street youths did drugs and crime, While young women did prostitution to make, ends meet, Most of them are single and abandoned, Those who were married were abused physically, mentally and emotionally. Empowering these youths, was the best tool to help them overcome their challenges, often I volunteer.
I hold Diploma in Project management and planning, an opportunity i got while volunteering in one of the Organisation in Kawangware slums. Skills gained from this course has moulded me personally in that I am able to plan well, set goals, manage project, do Social Research, monitor and evaluate projects on time. I got this chance because I am resilient, committed and determined to succeed in life.
My goal is to enroll in the United States International University in Nairobi so I can get Bachelor of Arts degree on, in Development studies and Philosophy. This will give, an opportunity to give back, to the community I come from. I will use the skills and knowledge gained, to inspire children living in the slums, to unleash their potential and know that their dreams are VALID regardless of their background.
I love reading inspirational novels and most importantly the Bible, participating in local fora, play football at my leisure time and visiting children's home. I value integrity which has made me be True to myself and respect other's and most importantly being Thankful.
