We are a bunch of 10 friends who have decided to run 10km at this year’s Standard Chartered Run to raise funds for Tamar Village.
Who is Tamar Village?
Tamar Village was established in Singapore in 2010 to reach out to people in the Red Light Districts. They aim to come alongside and befriend them, one person at a time, to bring hope, help and healing.
They do this by walking a journey of restoration with individuals (called “trainees”) and their families who have made a decision to no longer be involved in or influenced by the trades of the Red Light District. They take time to journey with each individual to iron out practical life issues like housing, marriage and their children’s education, whilst encouraging holistic growth in attitudes, habits, and character through daily interaction.
Why Are We Running?
We want to raise funds so Tamar Village can continue this meaningful work. We have come together from different walks of life to form this team with a common vision and heart to see lives built. Most of us have never run this distance before, and many do not even like running. However, we have decided to do this together because committing to train for a run and perseverance are traits we want to model.
We believe in some way that this physical journey parallels (albeit imperfectly) the courage of the trainees in Tamar Village who have chosen to leave the trade, and their tenacity despite their circumstances to turn their lives around.
