WHO AM I AND WHAT AM I DOING?
Hi everyone! My name is Safira and I have set myself a goal of making 120 reusable cloth sanitary pads in the next 100 days, to donate to The Pad Project run by Too Little Children (http://toolittlechildren.org/pad-project/).
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
The Pad Project travels to Kenya every six months to dispense pads made by volunteers directly to the girls in Kenyan schools, and provide them with education about feminine hygiene, safe sex, associated risks, and respecting their bodies. Providing these school girls with reusable menstrual products is extremely important, as disposable sanitary products are too expensive for their families to afford, and many girls end up missing 1 week or more of school a month when they have their period. Missing so much school makes it harder for them to pass their exams, which impacts their probability of graduating high school and therefore lessens their future prospects and earning potential. Many girls are also persuaded to buy disposable pads in exchange for sex.
By giving them reusable cloth pads, they miss less school, have more control over their own bodies and have more chances for future success. The pads last for 3-4 years if cared for properly, and by making 120 of them, I will be able to impact the lives of many young girls in a hugely positive way. Each pad will cost around £2.00 in materials, so for every £2 you donate, you change the life of one schoolgirl. Help me support and empower these young women by donating today!
HOW CAN YOU STAY CONNECTED, AND HOW WILL I SPEND THE FUNDS?
I am undertaking this challenge as part of the '#100dayproject' hashtag on Instagram, where you choose a project to focus on for 100 days. My project is to make 120 cloth pads to donate to The Pad Project by July 18th 2018, and I will be posting updates about my progress under the hashtag '#100daysofclothpads' on the account '@quilts.by.safira'. Follow me there to stay updated on the project's progress!
I aim to raise £300 in the first 21 days of the project, which will pay for the fabric and materials needed to make the pads. If you can, please pay by debit or credit card, to avoid PayPal's transaction fee which reduces the amount of your donation which can actually be used by my campaign. Any donations not spent on materials will be used for postage to send the pads to Too Little Children, and any remaining unspent donations will be donated directly to the organisation to help them fund other projects.
