100 Days of Cloth Pads: Making 120 cloth pads in 100 days for Kenyan schoolgirls

Update posted by Safira van Veen On May 05, 2018

Hello all!

So, the fundraiser is over, and it did SO WELL! 111% funded, £334/£300 raised. All I can say is thank you, SO MUCH, to everyone who contributed. I have been blown away by your generosity and the support that came from both expected and unexpected places. My sincere gratitude to you all.

An update on what's been happening with my project since my last update: more orders have arrived, fabric is being washed, dried and cut into pattern pieces, and my workstation at home is gearing up to get all those pads made. There is only one order left to place, for the waterproof PUL fabric, which will be ordered this coming week. Everything is way ahead of schedule! So the donations are being put to their intended use and the pad kits are beginning to take shape.

This will be my last update on this page, now that the fundraiser has exceeded its target and is closed to further donations. BUT I will still be posting regular updates on my Instagram (@quilts.by.safira), so to all my backers and anyone else who wants to see this project develop, follow me there and stay tuned.

Thanks again to everyone who has supported me, I am so excited to get everything underway and to be using my skills for such a good cause. It wouldn't be possible without you.

THANKS!!!!!

Love Safira xxx

Hi all!

Just a wee update on what's been happening since my campaign was fully funded last week. I have now withdrawn all of the funds raised and have placed almost all of my equipment orders. I am waiting for 15 m of towel, 7 m of flannel, 6 m of velcro, 50 m of elastic and 10 new rotary blades to arrive. I am ordering a little extra of all the fabrics, as the campaign was so well-funded that I may be able to make MORE than 120 pads! Let's see! The only things left for me to order are 6 m of PUL (polyurethane laminate, a waterproof fabric for the bottom layer of the pads), a couple of packs of new sewing machine needles (with the amount of pads I'm making, I'm gonna need a few!) and some good quality polyester thread. So, the ordering process is almost complete and I should be receiving quite a few parcels in the coming days. Once everything starts arriving, I can start pre-washing all the fabric, which will be no easy feat considering how much of it there will be! I already feel sorry for my poor washing machine! Haha but in all seriousness, the project is ticking along very nicely and is well ahead of schedule. I just want everything to hurry up and arrive already, so that I can get sewing!

Once again, thanks to all of you who have donated; your funds are already being put to very good use. Stay tuned for the next update!

Love, Safira x

Dear everyone:

Thanks to all of my wonderful backers, my campaign is now fully funded - actually, overfunded! This means I now have enough to make all of the 120 cloth pads, plus have extra money for postage to send them to Too Little Children, with perhaps even a little extra money to donate straight to the organisation for them to use in their other charitable projects. Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who has donated and made this possible. I am beyond grateful.

I withdrew the funds from the first week of the campaign today, and once they have arrived in my bank account I will be placing my first order, for 14 metres of Terry cloth to make 480 pad liners. My supplier has very generously offered to donate extra fabric remnants, which will help me reduce the amount of Terry cloth I actually have to order to less than 14m, and will therefore make your donations go further.

I have also negotiated a discount with the supplier who will be providing the PUL fabric for this project, so having the support of my two main suppliers just makes it all go that little bit further.

Once again, THANK YOU to everyone who has supported this campaign, and the project overall. I am overwhelmed by people's generosity and enthusiasm for what I'm doing, and I can't wait to get started on actually making the pads. I will continue to update you all on my progress via my Instagram account, @quilts.by.safira.

Thanks guys, you're the BEST.

All my love and thanks,

Safira
