‘He who loves a little, gives a little’. This powerful quote came from Saint Porphyrios of Kafsokalivia (one of the most revered Saints of the 20th century). It perfectly illustrates the circumstances of the present day whereby a historic number of people are overwhelmed with stress and anxiety at the hands of the virus and a global economy which hangs on by a thread. Furthermore, the introduction of restrictions has left the mental state of many in jeopardy with uncertainty reaching it’s peak, in a world where uncertainty dominates. With no places open to retreat to, slowly but surely, many are becoming victims of something they have no control over. However, amongst the chaos of today, many have turned to the church whether that is to regain stability, pray for a loved one going through hardship or even to find a source of positivity during a time where everything seems to be negative. During difficult times, it is imperative that we unite as a collective to spiritually fight through, so in the end, we all come out on top together as one. This was the Saints’ last words, his last entreaty to God, his last prayer, his greatest desire was that we ‘become one’. That was what he ached, wished and longed for.

Saint Porphyrios of Kafsokalivia was a Saint who, during his time on earth, experienced firsthand what it truly meant to be deprived. An example of this was when a mountain village in Greece had no water. This came to Saint Porphyrios’ attention and so, the Saint prayed and with his spiritual vision he located where there was a clean source of water to the exact measurements. This miracle is one of many and, during a time where poverty and illness is at its most prominent in recent history, it is only fair to commemorate a Saint who spent his days helping those less fortunate.

Another miracle, which was recently noted, was that of a 22-year-old girl in Nicosia. Before going to bed, an old man appears to her as if from nowhere. He then proceeded to greet the girl and asked her to help him build his house in Limassol. Unafraid, the girl then questioned what type of house, to which he responded by saying ‘a church’. At that point the girl then sees the location of the church behind the old man. The girl then goes on to ask him who he was and the old man revealed that he was Saint Porphyrios. After the old man left, the girl checked the house, where she was astonished to find that all the doors were locked, and it was impossible to enter. Even more miraculously, the old man had completely vanished. Miracles like this show us that our faith is very much alive and that Saints have an eternal and perpetuating impact on our lives, which must be memorialised.

Given the context of the miracle, we have officially begun to build the first church in Cyprus dedicated to Saint Porphyrios of Kafsokalivia. In honour of his great love for his fellow man that was centered upon guiding them to the joy of transfiguration according to Christ. The church is to be located within the municipality of Limassol, however, the consequences of the pandemic have left us with a shortage of funds. This is why we have turned to the community. In the words of the Saint himself, “Christ is everything. He is joy, he is life, he is light”. God provides security and strength in times of need and, now more than ever before, people are in need. The new Church of Agios Porphyrios will be the home of the desperate, the consolation of the bereaved and the healing of the sick. For this reason, the Holy Diocese of Limassol humbly asks for your donations to complete this project, which in supporting those who are currently struggling.

Thank you for all the support and may God bless you and your families.
