Your Support Needed for The Fight for Democracy in Hong Kong – Production of The “Lady Liberty Hong Kong”

Why?
Since June 2019, Hong Kong has become the epicentre in the struggle for democracy. Under the shadow of an ignorant autocracy, soaring international attention, our democratic movement becoming a war of attrition, a symbol that represents our pursuit of democracy is necessary to unite the movement. A statue seems to be the perfect medium to cohere Hongkongers, awe the anti-democratic forces, draw global attention, pay homage to those who have made sacrifices, and unite local democratic fighters.

The IDEA
11 August 2019 was a day of terror. When police brutality and selective law enforcement happened extensively on the day, what stands out is a female volunteer medic was blinded after being shot by HK Police. Evidence point towards the only possible explanation: HK Police was purposefully aiming towards her head from a close distance, and ruptured her eyeball with a Bean Bag shot fired from a shotgun. Since then, the anti-democratic lackeys has been attempting to defame democratic fighters, claiming the injury was caused by protestors with a slingshot, which was proofed physically not possible to penetrate the 3M goggles the volunteer medic was wearing.
This tip of the iceberg parallels what happened in recent months, reflecting the deceptiveness and ridiculousness of those reigning over Hong Kong.
Since then, the volunteer medic has been known as “The Lady who was blinded by police gunshot”, and has become a figure braveness against the suppression and defamation Hongkongers face during their fight for democracy. Hongkongers cover their right eye as a gesture, to remember tyrannic oppression we face, the terror caused by anti-democratic forces, and to remind each other of our sacrifices during our unsatisfied cry for democracy.
This is why “Lady Liberty Hong Kong” is heavily influenced by the brave volunteer medic.

What’s the Plan?
Drawing from collective wisdom, we are planning to build a 4-metre-tall statue of “Lady Liberty Hong Kong” on 31/8, and exhibit at a location to be decided.
Current progress:
- Based on a poll on LIHKG on 24/8, design No.5 was selected. We made minor adjustments based on opinions collected from the forum and within the team.
- The 3D model has been completed and 3D printing is already underway. Within the very pressing timeframe, printing the entire body of the statue with 3D printers is not a viable option. After some discussion, we have decided to 3D print the intricate parts of the model, including the head and hands, while other parts of the body will be produced with conventional methods by volunteering craftsmen.
Brief process description:
- (Done) Design of 3D prototype
- (26-29/8) Divide and designate different parts to team members with access to 3D Printers.
- (26-29/8) Combine body skeleton
- (28-30/8) Produce Styrofoam body and arms
- (30/8) Gather the head, hands and other parts for the final process, including adhesion, polishing, surface retouch, structure reinforcement, etc.
- (31/8) Transport the statue to the demonstration, assemble on-site of exhibition

How will we spend the raised fund?
HKD $10,000
13. 事後Storage(6個月) … HKD $36,000
HKD 10,000
HKD $200,000
以上預算為製作各部分所需耗材,以及與之相關的交通費等支出,屬粗略估計;
Through crowdfunding, we are hoping to cover the cost of the project, including production, logistics, promotion, etc.
Flash Statues: We want to produce multiple statues, standing between 30cm to 200cm tall each, and install them in various locations with a flash mob-style transportation and installation team. We plan to produce around 20 Flash Statues and place them at symbolic locations, for instance, outside the Hong Kong Government HQ, the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government and maybe even install them in museums. But because of the tight schedule, we are focusing on completing the main statue, we will provide all updates after we have discussed and decided the details of the Flash Statues at a later date.
All excess funds will be donated to “612 Humanitarian Relief Fund” to help cover the legal fees of arrested democratic fighters.
If we could not raise enough funds for the main statue and have to cancel the project, all donations will be refunded to all donors.
If we raised enough funds for the main statute, and the remaining funds are not enough to cover the cost of Flash Statutes, remaining funds will be donated to “612 Humanitarian Relief Fund” to help cover the legal fees of arrested democratic fighters.
Breakdown of the Use of Fund:
1. 3D printing … HKD $22,500
2. Body, Arms & Base … HKD $15,000
3. Surface painting … HKD $7,500
4. Skeleton … HKD $7,500
5. External adhesion … HKD $7,500
6. Logistics … HKD $7,500
7. Printing and miscellaneous … HKD $7,500
8. Mold (to be resued for 20 times) ... HKD $7,500 (Flash Statues)
9. Rotational Frame for moulding ... HKD $5,000 (Flash Statues)
10. Remold(20 times)... HKD $40,000 (Flash Statues)
11. Logistics ... HKD $20,000 (Flash Statues)
12. Photo shooting ... HKD $10,000
13. After-storage(6 months) … HKD $36,000
14. Platform fee ... HKD 10,000
Target: ... HKD $200,000
Items 1-7 of the above budget are the estimated production cost of the main statue, accounting for all required materials, labour and logistics costs.
Items 8-14 are funds reserved for producing the Flash Statues. Though the first public exhibition will be on 31/8, the “Lady Liberty Hong Kong” Project will continue to operate with more projects in the pipeline, such as the production of Flash Statues and permanent exhibitions of the main statue.
