OUR STORY

Nearly two years ago, we were invited to a baby celebration for a dear friend, Matt. Amie & Matt have worked closely together, creating dozens of websites over the years, and he has become part of our chosen family. We knew exactly what we wanted to get a developer like Matt—a cool kid’s book about code, a book that would introduce Matt's baby to the nerdy world of websites, apps, and digital products. We were shocked to find that none existed... so, we wrote our own kid’s code book (well, a PDF) with brightly colored words on a black background.

Meet Matt and Camper. We want Matt to read our book to Camper before he gets much older, to inspire Camper with the wonderful world of code. I mean, the poor kid has waited his WHOLE life for this book.

OUR VISION

We knew the right illustrations would bring the book to life and into the hands of future developers. At a party, we saw a cute illustration that our friend Sarah‘s colleague drew of her that perfectly captured Sarah’s warm and spunky personality. We immediately knew we’d found our partner for the code book, someone who would understand our vision and could build on it with his own silly imagination and fabulous creatures. With illustrator Jason Heglund on board, the The Wonderful World of Creatures & Code (aka WWoCC) was finally born.

This is the awesome Jason. This guy should get paid for all the nights and weekends he needs to spend illustrating WWoCC away from his wife and daughter.

OUR BOOK

The Wonderful World of Creatures & Code introduces readers of all ages to foundational code terms and tags used to create websites. The book's world represents our diverse world, with girls, boys, and creatures of all types. WWoCC will be an 8" by 10," full-color hardcover book with premium uncoated linen paper stock—your eyes and hands will thank us.

The book is not all fun and games—we worked hard to make sure the illustrations bring each code concept to life. Each drooling creature gets new features added in this lab, just like you add attributes to <a><img src=" class="redactor-linkify-object" />

A world of code, kids, creatures, and rhymes

WWoCC colorfully illustrates 26 essential HTML tags and fundamental code elements used in making websites—and has integrated “insider” references that developers and engineers will appreciate. Short, rhyming pairs make reading time fun and easy, even with a complex topic. The creature-filled world draws kids in and keeps them hooked as they learn things like the difference between ordered and unordered lists.

Who wouldn't want a pink polka-dotted creature with teef like those teaching HTML concepts like how a <br><img src=" class="redactor-linkify-object" />

tag creates line breaks in a website?!? So darn good.

Fun and accurate

Written to teach and inspire, The Wonderful World of Creatures & Code presents code terms and concepts in a simple way, rather than dumbing them down. With each WWoCC storytime, readers of all ages get familiar with arguably the most important language of the 21st century, with laughs and funny-toofed creatures along the way.

Pirates, unicorns, ice cream-eating creatures, and slobbery aliens teach the basics of making web pages—including cascading style sheets. What more could you possibly want?

A perfect 21st-century bedtime story

The Wonderful World of Creatures & Code is a must-have baby shower gift and go-to bedtime story for all kids, not just those of developers like our friend Matt. WWoCC is kid tested and developer approved. Please help us bring WWoCC from the drawing board to your child's hands.

Just like <img src=" class="redactor-linkify-object" />
Just like starts every HTML file, the creature and kid are at the start of their own journey.

OUR REQUEST

We need your help to get this book into the hands of as many children (and adults) as possible. Please fund this project and spread the word with friends and family. And, if you’re wondering, most of the funds raised will be used to pay Jason the Great (illustrator) and to print and ship the book to you. The rest goes to the super exciting stuff: Fulfillment costs, Kickstarter fees, payment processing fees, freight charges, packaging materials, and copyright costs. Space paint not included.

Each pretty penny has its place in creating a quality children's book.
