On the 5th of March 2015 our schnauzer Millie, was brutally attacked by a pitbull dog at 21:30. Millie was being taken for a walk by our oldest daughter on the lead. The pitbull came from behind a hedge and latched itself onto millies side inflicting a horrendous wound to her chest and breaking four ribs. She was rushed to the Glasgow university vetinary school where she underwent a long operation to repair the damage on Friday the 6th. The vetinary surgeon phoned us at tea time on Friday to say that Millie had come through the operation but would remain in a critical condition for some time. The major concern at that time was the substantial open wound causing trauma and infection worries. The damage to the tissue was so severe that the surgeon worried that, if the chest wall leaked and drew air, the lungs would not inflate properly. She also developed an inflamed pancreas. With all this going on, it broke our hearts having to explain to our three girls that Millie might not pull through. We visited her every day. She has been part of our family from eight weeks old. She is just short of eight years old now. Millie was in intensive care for two weeks and allowed to come home on day 19. She had to undergo another rib procedure which the surgeon wanted to carry out before the wound eventually closed up. She has made an amazing recovery and is adored by all the vetinary staff. She goes to vet school to have her dressing renewed daily. The pitbull dog owner has now been charged with three dog attacks pertaining to the dangerous dogs act and we are awaiting a descision from the procurator fiscal as to the fate of the pitbull. Our thanks and appreciation go to the work, love, care and dedication from all the staff at the Glasgow university vetinary school. We are delighted that Millie landed in the talented hands of Dr Malcolm Booth BVSc Cert SAS MRCVS. It has now been five weeks since the attack and Millie continues to grow stronger and stronger. This successful outcome has come at a cost to us. We, at the time of writing sit with a bill of seven thousand pounds. If anyone feels they want to help us, we would be delighted to accept a small donation.

  • I saw the post about this by Nicole Farely (I went to school with her). I really do wish I could contribute more as I know how much our pets become a part of your family as much as a child. I'mean not able to work because of disability so this is all i can afford. I'd be heartbroken if this had happened to our youngest member Roxy (cocker spaniel) and don't know what I'd do without insurance for her. I really do hope all animal lovers out there rally behind you.
