About us:

Race to the Finish Foundation, Inc. was founded in 2014. We are an Ohio based 501(c) (3) non-profit off the track thoroughbred rescue, retraining and rehoming program. We provide retiring racehorses, in jeopardy of facing an unlucky and not-so fortunate future, the second chance at a rewarding career and content extended life. Our goal is to provide a safe environment where these intelligent animals can be retrained for their new career. Many of these horses will go on to become sport horses, hunter/jumpers, eventers, dressage mounts, trail/pleasure horses and companions.

Donations:

100 % of Race to the Finish Foundation donations goes toward our mission, which is to provide thoroughbred racehorses, which have completed their racing careers, the opportunity to establish second careers. We will be promoting animal welfare by providing a safe haven and retraining them for a new career in education, community service or rehoming them with qualified families for the purpose of preventing cruelty to animals. This money goes directly to feed/board, care, retrain and medical expenses for each rescued horse. Our monthly expense to rescue 4 racehorse is approx. $2150/month. All donations made to our organization are tax-deductible.

 Volunteers:

Race to the Finish Foundation is an all-volunteer organization and our horses are cared for by experienced, trained volunteers who understand the unique qualities that an ex-racehorse possess. Once retrained, Race to the Finish will help to educate future qualified owners with the transition of rehoming their new horse. Our programs include an assistance service for racehorse owners, a thoroughbred rescue/ re-training/ rehoming program, and educational efforts targeting racehorse owners, breeders and trainers, as well as the horse community and the general public.

Community involvment:

Here at Race to the Finish Foundation we also provide local youths with the opportunity to grow in the science of equine care. We provide underprivileged youths the chance to learn about the proper feeding and care of horses. We also sponsor local youths, who without our support would not be able to participate in equestrian activities.

Why do you care?

According to The Animal Welfare Institute, "every 5 minutes an American horse is slaughtered for human consumption" (https://awionline.org/content/horse-slaughter). When thoroughbred racehorses are finished with their racing careers, whether it be because they were injured or because they just weren't fast enough or their head wasn't in the game, it's not longer a good business decision to keep the horse around.  Owners have to pay for the horses' boarding, feed, care and training and this is expensive. The horse is no longer earning money and thus has little value in the racing business. At this point, many owners turn to organizations such as Race to the Finish Foundation, Inc. to help them retrain and rehome their horses. Often, these horses are are turned out into fields and neglected.  Sometimes they are sent to the sale barns and end up at slaughter houses in Mexico and Canada.

Slaughter Statistics:

In the years 2012-2013 there were 311,228 horses sent to Mexico and Canada for slaughter (https://awionline.org/content/horse-slaughter-statistics). Horse slaughter was band in the U.S starting in 2008. During the year prior to 2008 (2007) there were a total of 106,963 horses slaughtered with 28,902 being slaughtered in the U.S. Even though horse slaughter is band in the U.S., it isn't stopping the killings under barbaric conditions for their meat. Slaughter houses from Canada and Mexico are traveling across our boarders to buy these animals (https://awionline.org/content/horse-slaughter-statistics). Many of these slaughtered horses are ex-race horses looking for a new home.

How to become involved in this mission?

Please donate to our organization, we are addressing an obvious need in the community of horse racing. It takes over $2150/month to rescue 4 horses or $537/horse/month.  We need to rescue more, but our organization cannot do this without the support of people like you who care about the world.
