US$6,654.00raised of $5,000.00 goal goal
Hi! My name is Jordan, and I want to tell you a little bit about my friend, Carmen. When I met Carmen, it was basically love at first sight. Carmen has a boisterous, engaging personality that draws you in and makes you feel like life is one big party. Despite being a paraplegic since birth, she has maintained an eternally cheerful outlook on life. Where others might ask “Why me?” Carmen has been too busy being awesome to ever let her physical state impede on achieving success and personal happiness.
Carmen’s 1993 minivan (fondly nicknamed “Calypso”) broke down for the final time in March. After years of coaxing Calypso to go just a few more miles, Carmen was left without a vehicle. Carmen’s mother, Ellen, has been assisting with recovery after Carmen’s 5th spinal surgery in January, and she has been able to drive Carmen to and from work while sharing Carmen’s 1 bedroom apartment for the past 5 months (the amount of love and patience these ladies have is astounding).
However, this is not a long term solution. Carmen’s brace will be removed in early July, at which point she will need the ability to resume her independent lifestyle. That’s where you come in! With your help, I would like to raise $5,000 to help purchase a working vehicle for Carmen. After the vehicle is purchased, Carmen will have it outfitted to make it handicap accessible through the assistance of a Michigan program.
Although the "goal" is $5,000 I have enabled "overfunding" so the more money we raise the better vehicle we can get for Carmen! You can donate any amount from $1 to $100,000! Every bit helps!
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me and the rest of the team at [email protected] Please check out the video Carmen's brother, Mitch made regarding how he feels about having such an inspirational big sister. Thank you for your support!

On the road again
Update posted by Carmen AndFriends at 04:42 pmA little less than a month ago, we completed a very successful fundraiser to assist with the purchase of a handicap accessible vehicle for Carmen. Carmen's parents were able to match the $8,000 you all contributed, lowering the cost of Carmen's new van by $16,000. Do you have any idea. . . . .
A month of kindness
Update posted by Carmen AndFriends at 08:59 amFundraising is officially over! Carmen acquired $6,654 in donations using GoGetFunding, plus the $1,670 (this number might actually be higher today than it was when I talked to her on Thursday) in cash and personal checks she has received in the mail. That puts the total amount given over the. . . . .
Carmen's Progress
Update posted by Carmen AndFriends at 07:34 amYesterday, Carmen's doctor gave her wonderful news that her CT scan looked "fantastic!" This means that Carmen is beginning to wean herself off the brace for the first time since January. She is very excited to be able to wear nice clothes again instead of tee shirts and yoga pants. . . . .
We've reached our base goal
Update posted by Carmen AndFriends at 12:15 pmThanks to the generosity of family, friends, and complete strangers, we reached our base goal of $5,000 on June 19th, less than 2 weeks after we created the site for Carmen. I cannot tell you how much this means to all of us! We are overwhelmed by the kindness of. . . . .

"We've raised $5,648 on the site! Nice work, guys! Carmen has scouted out a 2004 Town & Country (with a ramp already installed!) for $19,000. If you've already donated--THANK YOU! Spread the word amongst your friends/coworkers/network!" - Jordan Freeman

Carmen is the strongest and most upbeat person I know. I am glad she has really great friends who sign her up in contests and setup fundraisers to help her gain back independence.
