Meet Zoozey. The politest cat in the world. (Seriously)

Zoozey's adoption was a spur of the minute decision for me, but when I saw him and heard his story I knew I had to give hime a home. Three years ago his owners surrendered him to a rescue group. They had two cats and were moving to an assisted living facility. They couldn't afford the pet deposit for both of their cats, so they decided to give Zoozey up and keep their other cat. He had been parted from his companion cat and my heart broke for him. Zoozey is six now and he's a sweet gentle cat who shows me every day he's grateful to have a good home.  I nicknamed him my little gentleman because he's considerate of me and his kitty companions and he's incredibly well-behaved. When he's feeling good he loves to groom and then playfight with his companions. He's incredibly enthusiastic about his diabetic canned food and napping on my bed.

Zoozey's Problem (Mine too)

Zoozey has always been nervous, so I try to keep things at home quiet and routine so that he can live a happy comfortable low stress life. He became diabetic at the beginning of the year, and he's been in great health. Until last week. He developed a UTI and that lead to diabetic ketoacidosis, which is a life threatening complication. He lost a bunch of weight, he stopped eating, and he began having difficulty breathing. He spent three days at the vet and they had trouble getting his blood glucose under control because he was so stressed. They sent him home yesterday in the hopes that being somewhere familiar would calm him down enough to get his glucose under control. Unfortunately it didn't. It skyrocketed to a dangerously high level (600!). He's now at an emergency vet under 24 hour care, and this is incredibly expensive. I'm a grad student and I have two jobs to make ends meet. I've spent pretty much every penny I have and I maxed out my Care Credit card today to save his life, and I don't regret it at all. But that money is going to run out quickly. Zoozey is only six, and I want to give him his best shot at life. His chances are good--if there's money for his care. I don't want to fail him.

What the Funds Will Be Used For
Every single solitary penny will be used to pay for Zoozey's vet care and medicine. The poor guy is pretty pitiful. He's lost half a pound in the last three days. He's severly dehydrated and this has made him too weak to get around. He's nauseous and not able to keep any food or water down.

He's being monitored 24 hours a day. His blood glucose levels are checked every two hours. He's getting iv fluids to and insulin to get his blood glucose under control and he's receiving antibiotics to treat the UTI. He's cozying up with a heating pad right now because his temperature was a bit low. The good news is he's slowly responding to the treatment and the emergency vet is hopeful that he will recover with continued treatment. Please consider helping Zoozey out.

An Update on Zoozey

Update posted by Barbi Fowler at 06:37 pm

He's emaciated, has atrophied muscles, and he's still very confused (he developed cerebral edema over the weekend). He's not out the woods yet, but he's doing much better than he was yesterday. When I went to see him this afternoon, his glucose was much much lower, his electrolytes are starting. . . . .

  • When I was in grad school my dog got into some Tylenol and had to go to the e-vet. It was crazy expensive, but we do what we have to do for our pets. Hope this story has a happy ending!

  • Thanks John. I appreciate it. Because of you, I had nine wonderful years with Rocky and I'm forever grateful for that.
