Hello, my name is Paul L. and I am a grateful recovering addict.

I have been clean since June 6, 2010. I am an active member of Narcotics Anonymous (NA) in Miami, Florida, where I perform volunteer service. I work steps with a sponsor and sponsor others in the program. I am grateful to the fellowship of NA and for the opportunity it has given me for a new life.

Being in recovery has made me realize I would like to help others along this path on a full-time basis. To this end, I would like to enroll in a 14-month program to become a Certified Addiction Professional (CAP) at the Academy for Addiction Professionals in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The full cost of this program is $5000 and is not eligible for U.S. Dept. of Education student loans. I am seeking $2500 toward the cost of tuition. Currently, I am working part-time and seeking full-time work while working on a master's in Health Promotion and supporting my recovery which must come first. I have a large amount of debt from student loans and past mistakes. I cannot afford to attend this program without some financial assistance.

I am 53 years old. For almost my entire adult life, I have been an activist and organizer in a variety of social justice movements: labor rights, antiracism, LGBTQ, antiwar/peace, Latin American and Middle Eastern solidarity, women's rights and pretty much anywhere I can help in the fight for justice and against oppression. I have never received pay for any of this activism. I don't regret a minute of this work, but this is what I did when many others my age were building their careers. To a large degree, I sacrificied financial stability for causes I believe in.

I believe that my experience, strength and hope as someone in recovery can help others find a new way of life without the use of drugs. I would like to give back full-time what was so freely given to me in recovery. I just need a little help along the way.  Anything that anyone can contribute would be so gratefully appreciated. Thank you.
