After the succesful raising of the Welsh National Great War Memorial at Langemark, Flanders, on 16 August 2014, the Flemish committee which initiated the project changed it's name to "Welsh National Memorial & Hedd Wyn Society". It's main tasks are the supervision of the memorial site in cooperation with the Council of Langemark, the organisation of a modest monthly ceremony  at the memorial and the coordination and support of future Remembrance events/ initiatives. Furthermore, the Society participates at a number of ceremonies in Flanders in order to draw attention to the Welsh participation in the Great War. In order to make this more visible, we want to replace our cheap off- the- shelf Welsh flag for a proper ceremonial standard. In addition, we want to present a pipe banner with the Welsh dragon to the piper who is voluntarily playing at most of our monthly ceremonies. For historic reasons  we decided not to base the design of our new standard on the actual Welsh flag, which did not exist as such in the Great War period, but rather on a combination of period badge and the symbol of the 38th Welsh Division. To underline the strong bonds of friendship between the people of Wales and Flanders, the official symbol of Flanders is included in the standard. As our committee spend most of it's resources at the memorial campaign and unveiling , we are now doing an appeal to the public to help us financing this new project, which will enable us "to show the flag" and represent Wales in flying it's proud dragon amongst the standards of the other nations at the many ceremonies to come to mark the 2014-2018 Centenary. In case of overfunding of this campaign, the funds will be used in line with the descriptions of the goals of the Society. Diolch!
