Help Stop Teacher Sexual Abuse

Educator Sexual Misconduct, The Mindset of The Offender,

a book to be self published.

Parents send their children to school and place them in the care of the education community. Each day there are news reports of teachers abusing the students. It is time to add to the effort of intervention and prevention. The book outlined below is my effort to help by coming forward and sharing a deeply personal story.

Sandusky, Lafave, Miramonte. These are all names synonymous with educator sexual misconduct. It is in the news all too much these days, not because this is a new phenomenon, but because of a new awareness. Yet even with the awareness provided by today’s media, the abuse continues. And I believe it is preventable. Who are these offenders? How do these offenses take place in the highly visible environment of our public schools? What are the tell tale signs that identify these actions? How can we intervene and prevent educator sexual misconduct?

The need to address the issue of educator sexual misconduct is never ending. It is all around us - a daily concern. Statistically, eighty percent of inappropriate teacher behavior goes unreported and the percentage that makes national news is only a small part of the remaining twenty percent. The victimization continues and begs intervention- a process that is woefully lacking. The recent cases in Pennsylvania (Sandusky) and California (Miramonte Elementary School) illustrate the scope of this problem.

Despite the world wide attention given to the church, the initiation of a multitude of sex offender registries, and global media coverage, educator sexual offending is only more public rather than being in decline. The focus of this writing, Educator Sexual Misconduct, continues seemingly unabated.

I kept a detailed journal that clearly shows the deviant mindset of an offender and his behavior which serve as cues for educators who must monitor their own faculty and staff.

“Educator Sexual Misconduct, The Mindset of The Offender,” is based on my writings annotating my journey through the legal system, incarceration, the sex offender relapse prevention program, my recovery, my subsequent return to the community and my determination to share my experience through the Ramifications program (www.ramifications.org) and this book in the hopes that my prior deviant behavior will serve as an example for prevention and intervention. What society wants and needs to know is 'how can we protect our students?"

To the best of my knowledge, educator sexual misconduct has never been approached from the inside—the viewpoint of an offender. The material is not taken from interviews or subject to the interpretation of counselors or therapists. Once in recovery, it was very clear to me how this message should be delivered and, fortunately, most my notes survived…notes written in real time. It has been very painful to relive those years through my notes, but it has been necessary to present an accurate account.

The book is to be self published, although a self publisher has not been selected at this time. Several are under consideration including “Xlibris” and “Outskirts.” Self publishing costs for a full package runs in the $7500 (USD) range and I am setting that goal plus an estimated cost of mailing rewards.

Goal: $8400  (USD), self publishing plus mailing costs for rewards (a copy of the book for donations of $25 or more).
