So why am I asking the public for help? Because music has been my chosen career since the age of 7 and I am determined to make it work for me in the long run.

I started off playing the flute in a small marching band back home in Ireland, in which the players nurtured me and encouraged me to pursue other musical things. In 2008 I was accepted to the Ulster Youth Orchestra and toured Germany with them in the summer as part of the Euroklassic Festival. Sitting on the stage of the Konzerthaus in Berlin, overwhelmed and humbled by the audience and the building itself, I got an amazing feeling. And I wanted to get that same feeling time and time again. It was a feeling of pride, joy, unity and above all, the knowledge of a universal language that breaks down barriers of race, religion and gender: Music. I have worked very hard from then, putting countless numbers of stressful hours and dedication into improving my skills in order to be a better musician. In 2012 I was given the incredible honour of being employed by the Ulster Orchestra, Northern Ireland's professional Symphony Orchestra, to do some extra work for them in various engagements. I have had the oppurtunity to play with dancers from the Royal Ballet and work with conductors such as JoAnn Falleta and David Brophy. But you see the thing is, Northern Ireland is a lot smaller than England, and I made ten times more connections there because, well even if it is stereotyping, everybody knew each other.

Since moving to London in 2011 I've concentrated on improving my technique and musicality so that when the time came to it I could give myself the chance to shine. But the musical climate in London is very difficult, especially for an orchestral flautist, and so I'm embarking on a new journey. Being accepted into the Royal Academy of Music is something I used to think was a pipedream but it has become a reality. A reality that I think would really improve my chances of making it in London. But a reality that will always be only a dream if I can't gather the funds to pay my fees. I would be working under the likes of Michael Cox (BBC Symphony Orchestra) and the infamous William Bennett. I believe the oppurtunity to study with these people would be unmeasurably valuable to me.  I have supported the arts for years. I have studied drama, seen and participated in live art installations, given charity concerts and taught inspiring and talented young children. All of this could continue with your help and support.

I cannot stress enough the importance of the arts in society for their ability to unite cultures and surpass differences and give those less fortunate the skills and creativity to make something of themselves. I do hope you will feel the same and help as little or as much as you can.

My most sincere thanks, from the bottom of my heart,

Aimee Consiglia
