For the price of a Starbucks, you could change a life forever.
My name is Rebecca Kennedy and I have a dream, but need your help to achieve it. A few years ago I was given an opportunity for a new life by a man named Judge Tim Dwyer. He put me in his Shelby County Drug Court Program when he didn't have to; he chose to. I am a success story today because that man took a chance on me. I want give someone else a chance at success as well, and The SHINE House is how I can make that possible. It's how we can ALL give someone a chance at success. Here's how it works:
The SHINE House is transitional housing that offers women support for recovery, encouragement, and direction for becoming self sufficient. The SHINE House will also offer basic living skills that many women do not possess due to their addiction starting at a very young age. My staff and I will offer computer skills, cooking classes, house keeping, resume writing, and interviewing skills just to name a few. All of these extras will be provided at no cost to the residents.
The women will be required to stay active in their recovery by attending 12 step meetings and working with their sponsors. All the meetings in the world won't keep these women sober and on the right path if they don't know how to live in mainstream society. Something that many of them have never experienced. That's where The SHINE House steps in to help! Some women get involved in unethical, sometimes illegal activities, including prostitution, to support their habits and families. Please help me try to prevent these women from ever having to turn to that life again.
We are trying to raise $30,000 to open the doors and operate for a year while we get the word out to the recovery community that another much needed women's house is available. This money will give many women a place to live drug free, safe lives until our other funding sources come through. The house I found is walking distance to several 12 step meetings, which makes it the perfect location, but it needs a LOT of work. The video I posted shows some of the issues that need to be addressed. Here is a reminder:
- new roof
- new floors
- an entire bathroom
- new HVAC
- ceiling patches
- closets built
This is just a short list! The furnishings for the entire house including appliances, couches, table and chairs, beds, dressers, etc. also need to be purchased. The projected open date of The SHINE House is May 1, 2016. Any help that you can provide will be greatly appreciated and put to good use to help women stay safe, sober and free from abuse!! Remember.....for the price of a Starbucks can change a life forever!!!!
