Care4Calais was founded in November 2015 by a group of UK volunteers to deliver essential aid and support to refugees in France and other areas. As a small charitable organisation we are doing all we can to help but we desperately need your support.

The scale of war and disaster in the Middle East and Northern Africa means we now have up to 100 new arrivals every day, and our resources are stretched to the limit. The camp in Calais is bigger than ever before with an estimated 9,000 people now living in terrible conditions, over 800 of which are children (and more than half of them are unaccompanied).

The people in Calais are just like you and I. They are engineers, lawyers, farmers, teachers and students; the only difference is that they happen to come from countries rife with war, torture and poverty.

These people have survived long, perilous journeys fleeing persecution and conflict in countries like Afghanistan, Sudan, Eritrea, Somalia, Libya and Syria. Many have walked thousands of miles, crossing continents in flip-flops, and arrive desperately hungry with only the clothes on their back.

The unofficial refugee camp is an incredible example of human resilience in a place that lacks the most basic of infrastructure or resources; there is no electricity, no sewage, no clothes washing facilities, only 142 portable toilets, 30 ticketed showers and a handful of water stations. Essentials that you and I take for granted like clean underwear, toilet paper and toothbrushes are in critically short supply.

We believe that every human has the right to be treated in a fair and dignified way and our core focus is on:

  • DIRECT AID: we run a targeted distribution system that provides food, clothing, toiletries and other essentials.
  • SOCIAL WELFARE AND TEACHING: we run mobile art, English and French workshops to help improve language skills and foster social interaction which breaks the monotony of day-to-day life.
  • BUILDING: we construct shelters from wooden pallets, tarpaulins and blankets and fortify tent floors to give protection from the changing weather.
  • EMERGENCY AID: we provide immediate assistance to the community in the event of a fire (a major risk) or demolitions and evictions.

Last winter we delivered gas and wood into camp every week. We fulfilled the needs of about 2,000 people but many were left cold. One year on, the population is significantly larger and so is our challenge.

As this winter approaches we would like to ensure that everyone has gas or firewood for cooking and heating, blankets and bedding, warm clothing and proper footwear.

We can’t do anything without your help:

  • £10 WILL BUY A FOOD PACK (including x2 tins of tomatoes, kidney beans, chick peas, lentils, rice/ flour, litre of oil, x3 tins of fish, tinned/fresh vegetables, tea/coffee, sugar and salt)
  • £13 WILL CLOTHE A REFUGEE (includes hoodie, joggers, t-shirt, underwear and socks)
  • £20 WILL BUY A PAIR OF SHOES (walking boots or trainers)
  • £20 WILL REFILL A GAS BOTTLE enabling a group of 8 people to cook hot food and keep warm for 3-4 weeks.

We give our time freely and are staffed entirely by volunteers. Our only costs are for running the warehouse and our fleet of vehicles which ferry the aid into camp. Therefore, every pound you give goes directly to refugees in the camp.

As the camp in Calais has not been declared an official refugee camp by the French government big organisations like the UNHCR, Oxfam, and UNICEF are not on site. As a small charity we are fighting a hard battle to keep the refugees clothed, fed and warm.

Please, please help us and be a part of making this winter tolerable for 9,000 souls who are just like you and me, except they happen to come from countries where there is war and torture.

Thank you so much,

The Care4Calais Team

Care4Calais is growing thanks to you

Update posted by Care4Calais Volunteers at 04:10 pm

In the last 3 months, we've co-ordinated the collection and distribution of thousands of coats, blankets, shoes, food parcels, tents, torches, cooking items, building materials and many other items that people have generously donated. Since then, the number of people in the camp has doubled to well over 6,000 and. . . . .

More progress!

Update posted by Care4Calais Volunteers at 07:29 am

We have most of the equipment we need and probably enough money to buy the rest. We have someone to run the cooking who has impressive experience of this type of large scale catering - its not like running a restaurant - and he can deliver hot highly nutritious meals. . . . .

Progress!

Update posted by Care4Calais Volunteers at 07:44 am

We won't need a marquee for the food distribution - refugees within the camp have offered to build one for us! In particular, Zimako (who built the school) and David (who built the Christian church) will lead the effort. The skills they have are awesome. They use branches from trees,
