Smart home sensing made easy and affordable. Improve your health with Beagle sensors placed throughout your home.

About this project

Beagle is a range of smart, wireless, non-intrusive sensors that you can place throughout your home or office, customized to your needs.

We spend up to 90% of our time indoors, so when it comes to your health and wellbeing, the indoor environment matters. The Beagle Sense team is on a mission to empower anyone, anywhere to improve their health and wellbeing in an easy, personalized, and affordable way.

Did you know that when your whole family or a group of you and your friends get together in the living room for a movie marathon with the pets curled up nearby, that CO2 levels can spike, leading to drowsiness and headaches?

Or, how many times a day do you wonder if the light or temperature are ideal for getting your latest report done on time, or whether the streetlights outside your bedroom are affecting your sleep? Probably not very often, but it's just those little tweaks that can make a big difference, and that's where Beagle Sense comes in.

We need to go beyond simply knowing the temperature inside our homes.

Beagle takes the connected home a step further by monitoring the things that contribute to you and your family’s health.

We designed Beagle to give you options--we don't believe that sensors are 'one size fits all', so we trained each Beagle for a specific sensing task, which means you can customize what and where you want to monitor.

Beagle works anywhere.

With such an affordable price tag, each Beagle sensor can be placed exactly where it needs to be so you know what’s going on and can take action.

Beagles can also be stacked together for even more insights, such as placing light, indoor noise, and temperature Beagles together to monitor sleep quality.

Beagle is easy to understand.

With Beagle, you’re the master of your data, thanks to a handy app and web interface. Set alerts so you can make changes while you’re home, such as opening a window to improve air quality, or while you’re away to keep tabs on the noise level while your kids throw a party. You can even travel with your Beagle and sync up sensor data from the office.

Plus, the Beagle app and web interface will give you the ability to view historical data from any of the sensors--you can indulge as much or as little as you want into your home's telemetry!

Beagle is easy to bring home.

Your Beagles come fully housetrained with setup in 3 quick steps:

  • Plug in the Beagle base station using the USB to a power source.
  • Connect it to your WiFi network.
  • Pair with your laptop or smartphone.

The Beagle sensors use Bluetooth to communicate with the base station, and are magnetic, giving you different placement options.

Each different Beagle sensor has its own stylish color band and icon, which makes identifying your Beagles a breeze.

Plus, your Beagles don’t need treats and lots of attention to keep working—only a yearly change of 2 'AAA' batteries. Each sensor also stores up to 2 weeks of data if your WiFi connectivity drops, or if the power goes out. Beagle has got your back!

Whether you own a home or condo, or rent an apartment, Beagle will help you maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Here are a few examples of how Beagle can help you keep tabs on your home not only while you're home, but also while you're away.

Lindsay loves to travel. When she’s away, she routinely offers her condo for rent. She wants the peace of mind of knowing her guests are comfortable, her home is being looked after, and her neighbours aren’t being disturbed by excessive noise.

How does Beagle help? Lindsay has stacked an indoor noise, temperature, and air quality sensor together in her living room. The noise sensor will alert Lindsay to when her guests arrive, and whether the music or the TV gets too loud, the temperature sensor will let her know if the heat or A/C is being used excessively, and by checking the air quality sensor data, Lindsay can see if doors or windows are being left open.

Aaron and Nat are new parents. They want to ensure a healthy indoor environment for their new addition by keeping tabs on air quality, as well as their home's Beagle Serenity Score--after all, an extra hour of restful sleep for baby means everyone wins!

How does Beagle help? Aaron and Nat have chosen to enable the Beagle Serenity Score on their app by placing 4 specific sensors in their baby's room: light, temperature, indoor noise, and outdoor noise. The data collected by these sensors give Aaron and Nat a cumulative Beagle Serenity Score to help ensure a restful nap time for the baby by alerting them to excessive noise, light, or unsuitable temperatures. They've also placed an air quality sensor in the room to make sure CO2 levels stay within a safe range.

Chandra is a dedicated musician and audiophile who just moved into a quirky, older home. She wants to protect her instruments and vinyl collection from excessive humidity or temperature changes, and make sure the air quality isn't causing her to feel too tired during her prep time for the next gig.

How does Beagle help? Chandra keeps a humidity sensor with her guitar so that she'll know if levels get too low or too high--both can spell disaster, especially when she travels to summer gigs. Same goes for Chandra's vinyl--another humidity sensor is stacked together with a temperature sensor in her music room to keep an eye out for conditions that could damage her collection. Finally, Chandra's home boasts a wood-burning fireplace, beside which she often falls asleep in her favorite chair. An air quality sensor monitors the CO2 levels so that Chandra doesn't wake up to a nasty headache.

NEW! Get Beagle Sense in your school with the Beagle Sense Young Innovators Program!

Beagle Sense believes that STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) is important for our future leaders, makers and innovators. Through its Young Innovators Program, Beagle Sense is offering sensors to approximately 150,000 schools across the USA and Canada, which will engage students in STEM learning as active participants in how the sensors collect and process information on the environment around us.

Getting Beagle Sense into your school is easy! Choose the Young Innovators perk to not only get a set of Beta Beagle Sense sensors into your school in the spring of 2016, but to also get your own set of sensors!

We've come a long way in 6 months!

Where are we now?

We've got working prototypes of the main hardware and software components of Beagle that you're backing as part of this Kickstarter project, including the base station, sensors, and mobile app.

Check out our demo video featuring a Beagle light sensor prototype:

The stars of our main campaign video and most of the photos are models, and have not yet moved into the next stage of development. Same goes for our app--the proof-of-concept has not yet been matched with the design. This is where all of you wonderful Kickstarter backers come in! Help us get our stylish yet subtle Beagles into your home.

Here's what our timeline looks like once we wrap up a successful Kickstarter campaign:

The idea for Beagle Sense arose from our team's fascination with how our indoor environments can affect our health at home or at the office. Each of us came into this project having wondered why our kids sometimes come home from school with headaches, or why we seemed to catch colds more often than our friends did, or even wanting to know how our Airbnb-listed property was faring while we had guests.

Plus, we love data! To us, the possibilities are endless and we can't wait to geek out when it comes to how we can interpret, extrapolate, and correlate indoor environmental data to build more functionality and value into our app, as well as evolving and building even more sensors!

Exciting times lay ahead, and the Beagle Sense team is pretty pumped. Hope you'll join us for the ride!

Thank you!

- John, Joshua, Kathryn, Rob, Phil, Jonathan, Randy, and Mike.

Risks and challenges

Though we've got experience taking products to market, there are still obstacles to overcome in certification, manufacturing, as well as unforeseen changes in component and production lead times and availability. We've got a trusted North American manufacturer that some of our team has worked with before, which will help to mitigate these risks.

Regardless, our team is committed to transparency not only about the challenges we may face, but also throughout this Kickstarter journey.
